El past perfect simple y el past perfect continuous son dos tiempos verbales que se utilizan para hablar de acciones ocurridas en el pasado. Son parecidos, pero no iguales, así que es conveniente aprender a diferenciarlos para utilizarlos correctamente.

Qué son el past perfect simple y el past perfect continuous
El past perfect simple y el past perfect continuous son dos tiempos verbales que se usan para hablar de una acción que tuvo en lugar antes de otra acción en el pasado. El equivalente en castellano sería el pretérito pluscuamperfecto (“yo había leído/había estado leyendo”).
- When I arrived home, John had made dinner (past perfect simple) ➡️ Cuando llegué a casa, John había hecho la cena.
- We were tired because we had been playing basketball (past perfect continuous) ➡️ Estábamos cansados porque habíamos estado jugando al baloncesto.
Estos dos tiempos verbales se parecen bastante entre sí, así que a veces puede resultar complicado diferenciarlos. Para eso, necesitas fijarte en si la acción a la que se refiere el verbo está completada o si está en progreso. El past perfect simple destaca la compleción de la acción, mientras que el past perfect continuous destaca el progreso o la duración de la acción. El past perfect continuous también sugiere que la acción es temporal, y no permanente.

La frase en past perfect simple se centra en la compleción de la acción: el mural está hecho. La frase en past perfect continuous se centra en el progreso de la acción: los estudiantes estaban haciendo esta actividad cuando algo más sucedió después; no queda constancia de que la acción se completase (no sabemos si el mural estaba terminado cuando se fue la luz). |
